Movie info: Hedy Lamarr was a Hollywood movie star who was hailed as the most beautiful and glamorous in the world. However, that was only the surface that tragically obscured her astounding true talents. Foremost of them was her inventive genius that a world blinded by her beauty could not recognize as far back as her youth in Austria with her homemade gadgets. This film explores Lamarr's life which included escaping a loveless marriage on the eve of Nazi Germany's conquest of her nation to a new career in Hollywood. Some time ago I read about Hedy Lamarr's penchant for inventing things and how she came up with an important torpedo guidance system that could have been put to use during World War II. I finally came across this documentary detailing all of it and it's a fascinating study. Specifically, she and a collaborator named George Antheil came up with the idea of secret radio communications to guide torpedoes so they couldn't be jammed. She wasn't even a United States citizen at the time, just after the start of America's involvement in the war, but hated Hitler and the Nazis. Her idea was given short shrift by the Navy and instead, the government persuaded her to go on a War Bond tour to raise money for the troops. After raising twenty five million dollars (equivalent to 340+ million today) she was dissed by the government and had her patent seized because she was an alien.
Eventually, Lamarr was given her due when the concept of 'frequency hopping' became the basis for such modern day conveniences as secure WiFi, Bluetooth, cell phones, GPS and assorted military technology. Never paid a cent for her contributions to science and the government, Lamarr maintained a courageously stoic attitude in later life, which was marred by erratic, out of control behavior as a result of addiction to methamphetamines, due in large part to Doctor Max Jacobson, otherwise known as 'Dr. Feelgood" to countless celebrities and President John F. Kennedy. The once glamorous and gorgeous Lamarr also began to rely on an extensive regimen of plastic surgeries that left her facially disfigured, eventually leading to her virtual seclusion.
The documentary is not entirely about Lamarr's proclivity for inventing things. It also gives a nice overview of her acting career beginning in Austria, her signing with MGM under Louis B. Mayer, and the disillusionment with the roles she was getting which led to producing her own films. For a woman and actress in the Forties, Lamarr was a feminist well before the word came to prominence in the Sixties. However her feminism as recounted in the story is of a positive nature in that she was able to stand up for herself and wouldn't accept the limitations that Hollywood or society tried to place on her. Married six times, she was someone unlucky in love, who defied convention to achieve a dignity that lives on as part of a legacy little known to the public. Perhaps "Bombshell" will dispel some of the myths surrounding her tumultuous life.
